2001: Remaining Beatles Meet for the Last Time

On this day in 2001, the three remaining Beatles met up for the last time

Harrison was struggling with lung cancer and knew he had limited time left and so asked his former bandmates to meet up once more in New York.

Paul McCartney and his fiancee Heather Mills flew from London and arrived first while Ringo Starr who had been in Boston with his daughter who was being treated for a brain tumor arrived shortly after. The group had a high-spirited lunch, although Harrison was on medication and ate only a vegetarian meal and water. The trio recounted many of their favourite memories of their days with the band.

Starr had to leave soon after lunch but McCartney and his fiancee stayed for the afternoon. Dr. Gil Lederman who treated Harrison said of the meeting, “There were lots of laughs and lots of fun. There were tears, but George remained very much a man of dignity. At the end, after both Paul and Ringo had left, he was fine and calm.” Harrison passed away two weeks later on November 29th at age 58.
